ARCHITECURAL CINEMA : Diehard

Nakatomi Plaza

Nakatomi Plaza

There’s a great discussion of spacial relationships with respect to the diegesis of the film Diehard, and our everyday surroundings over at BLDG BLOG.

I really appreciate this discussion because it’s rare that architectural cinema displays such explosive action, blood, and broken glass.

As the author Geoff Manaugh notes, The destruction of the building at the center of the film, Nakatomi Plaza, becomes a central theme. The players involved push the limits of their surroundings, using the building in unique ways; boring through safes, tunneling, climbing, exploding, sliding, outside – in, inside-out….even lounging.

I must admit my favorite scene in this film is when the limo driver is listening to ZAPP in the back of his ride, hidden within the building’s sub-garage.

SQUARE BLOCK

Some buildings here in New York really stand out because they occupy SO much more space than the average structure. I’m always impressed how you can see the Empire State Building from anywhere in the city as it takes up a whole square city block.

On the left is a photo I grabbed of the ESB,  just before an outdoor film screening in Brooklyn. On the right a far superior shot of the Chrysler Building as captured by my friend Julie.

Massive but they still seem to be the same size. Try to put it into perspective.

BLUE / GREEN

RATES OF CHANGE examines our responses to change on a macro level but also on a direct micro level; our transforming surroundings.
WNYC 93.9 FM has a great series running Wednesdays in April ‘09 called CITYSCAPES on the changing landscapes of Manhattan.

This week’s topic is hosted by architect Stephen Cassell and he looks at the overkill of the blue/green glass facades I’m sure you’ve seen in cities everywhere.

I think they make our streets so cold looking and  typically offer such a hard contrast with their surroundings – but that’s just me.

FILM FESTS – SOUNDTRACKS – GALLERY EXHIBITS

There are big developments brewing in a small production office in Brooklyn, NY and March is proving to be a busy month requiring high output.

RATES OF CHANGE is making a festival run after its late 2008 screening in the BUSHWICK FILM FESTIVAL; an opportunity which offered lots of feedback for the project. The short documentary has since been re-cut and re-mastered. Heck, even this website is new! Tyrone Tanous, Producer / Director of the project has also been developing a diverse array of new media projects, which will be unveiled as the weeks progress.

Included in the list of premiers: new directions for the digital short, FADE TO STATIC: Listening to the Radio, a new series of cinematic soundtrack compilations called EYES & EARS, and a video installation to be featured in an upcoming Boston, MA gallery show.

SURVEY – The Super 8mm Cityscape Film

SURVEY was “completed” in 2007.
I always figured it would be a silent film (as it stands now) but at nearly 45 min., I understand that can be a challenge for the average viewer, so I have been developing a soundtrack of sorts.

For now, enjoy this extended trailer for SURVEY, Part 1 of the ARCH CINE 3.

ASK YOURSELF THE SAME QUESTIONS

One way to offer a sense of what this project is all about is to allow everyone out there to sample and try to answer some of the questions I directed to the video’s interview subjects.

How would you respond to the following:

1. CHANGE is not a factor for some people. They are resistant or shielded; pushing the forces of change to the subconscious, or they may lead a very stable life.

2. CHANGE is a is a common singular event embraced with a reevaluation or revelation.
It is a moment of clarity, punctual, and defines behavior
It can have positive and negative effects brought on by positive and negative agents.
war, peace, birth, death, violence, learning and discovery, experimentation.

3. CHANGE is a constant, an ever present factor in life, reactions powered by this awareness accordingly.

Where do you fit in?

Did you ever want things to stay just as they are; without change?

Did you ever hit a milestone or learn a personal lesson?
Please describe this process.

When was the last time you tried something challenging for the first time?

What did it feel like to succeed?
What did it feel like to fail?
How long did that feeling last?

What did it smell like?, look like?, sound like?

Have you ever felt you’ve solved a personal mystery?
What was that experience like?
What did you attribute that to? Did you seek the answer or did it come to you?
What made the conditions right for that to happen?
Was it a private or public moment?

What was the last global event that caused you to notice or have some concern about?
POSITIVE EVENT
NEGATIVE EVENT
What were some of your initial thoughts surrounding this event?
Do you remember specifics?

Did someone ever try to challenge your way of thinking?

When was the last time you noticed something about a defined public space was suddenly removed (a fixture removed)?
